Applications for Legacy Project

On 8 th October 2021 the Trustees of the John Merricks Sailing Trust announced their intention to dissolve the charity, and apply its remaining funds to a purpose that will continue to honour the memory of Olympic dinghy sailor John Merricks, who died at a tragically young age in a car crash in October 1997.   The charity’s residual funds (approximately £200k) will be gifted to one or more organisations that can provide a lasting legacy that will respect the Trust’s purpose to help young people under the age of 25 to achieve their potential through the sport of sailing.

In view of this decision, the Trustees are unable to accept any further applications from individuals for personal grants.

The Trustees are inviting applications from sailing organisations and other smaller charities that can accept their donation and provide a legacy in John’s name that will last for at least 10 years.   We see this as an opportunity to develop exciting and innovative ideas that can unlock more of the untapped potential among the nation’s young sailors. We expect the successful initiative will be based predominantly on sailing dinghies and windsurfing. However, we welcome all proposals that fit the objectives of the Trust.

Organisations who wish to apply should e-mail:  applications@jmst.org.uk by 30 November 2021 to register their interest and outline their intentions.
Please see below document for guidance on submitting an Expression of Interest.
