Solent Cycling Challenge 2008

Tuesday, 15 July 2008
Our sincere thanks go to Jerry Hill, Phil Plumtree, Simon Russell and Brett who raised a grand total of £975.50 through sponsorship for taking part in the Solent Coast Cycling Challenge 2008.

Here is a report of the event from Jerry Hill....

Dear All,
Phil and I completed the ride on saturday. We set off at 7.45am from Hamble to grey skies and drizzle but with a good forecast we left the waterproofs behind. The weather steadily cleared and we missed the 8am ferry at Southampton for Hythe by 2 mins (should have looked at the schedules before we left!). From Hythe we headed down towards Fawley, accross to Bealieu, Bucklers Hard and then over to Lymington, only to miss the Ferry again by 2 minutes, another half hour lost! The next stage from Yarmouth to Cowes took us over to Freshwater bay, along the south coast of the island heading east, then up over the hills towards Newport and into Cowes for the chain ferry to East Cowes then over to Fishguard - we pushed hard on this leg to make the ferry on time, it was however delayed! Once we reached Portsmouth, short cycle to the Gosport Ferry, then the final push along the Solent coast to pick up the pink Warsash Ferry (which was full, so we had to wait for the next one!) and back into the pub in Hamble at about 4.15pm. We finally overtook Fumesy near Hill Head on the final leg, he had cannily started earlier than us, and with some interesting navigation, and some lucky ferry connections got himself over an hour ahead of us at one point, but we ground him down by the end!
Some stats:
Overall time taken: 8.5 hrs
Time Cycling: 4.2 hrs
Distance cycled: 105 km
Ferries: 6
Time waiting for ferries: nearly 2 hours in all
Punctures: 1
Total number of cyclists: 280
Stops en route: 0
