C-Tel Fund-raising Initiative launched at the JMST"s 10th Anniversary celebration

Monday, 19 November 2007
Businesses in the sailing and marine industry are signing up to an innovative new fund-raising initiative launched by Hamble-based sailing charity, The John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST). The Trust, which provides grants for up and coming young sailors, has teamed up with C-Tel, a unique telecom company that donates a significant proportion of the profit it makes from every phone bill to grass-roots sports.

Ben Ainslie, Patron of the JMST, America’s Cup skipper and triple Olympic medallist said, “We’re very excited about the new fundraising initiative with C-Tel and hope that it will help the Trust to continue its work supporting young sailors across the country. The programme will establish a regular and sizeable income for the Trust and hopefully will allow us to increase the size and number of grants we can give.”

C-Tel is a new division of Cricket Telecom which has successfully pioneered the concept of diverting commercial profits to charity as means of gaining new customers. Tim LeRoy, C-Tel’s Sponsorship Manager explained, “We don’t spend money on advertising and marketing and, therefore, we can pass those considerable costs directly to our customers’ chosen charities. It works like a sophisticated word-of-mouth campaign and we’ve found that this builds a great amount of trust and good will.”

He added, “We’ve been delighted by the initial response to the C-Tel concept from the sailing and marine industry and people have embraced the idea that their businesses’ utilities bills can make a meaningful contribution to a well-respected charity.”

He added “Our market research proved remarkably successful and showed that there’s a real commercial appetite for a telecom provider that is not just giant, faceless corporation. If companies can get great service, reduced phone bills and contribute to a cause close to their hearts at no extra cost, then it becomes more than just an obvious business decision.”

Over the past three years Cricket Telecom’s Sponsorship programme has put over £150,000 into English cricket at all levels of the game and will match that figure again in the coming few years. The success of the programme is due to the unique way that Cricket Telecom encourages businesses’ support for their local clubs. Cricket Telecom donates a proportion of every one of its customers’ bills to their chosen club; raising much needed funds for equipment, travel, coaching and even capital projects.

C-Tel has been established specifically to support the JMST in the same manner and during the three month test market operation raised over a £1,000 pounds, which was presented to the Trustees at the tenth anniversary party for the JMST.
