£1,000 donation for the John Merricks Sailing Trust

Monday, 11 September 2006
Our utmost thanks go to David Summerville at Phoenix Marine and Richard Valentine for donating a fantastic £1,000 to the Trust.

David Summerville (pictured right) won first prize in the standard fleet of the Laser Club Sailor Championships at Castle Cove Sailing Club, Weymouth. The winners in both the Standard and Radial divisions received a new boat in exchange for the boat they sailed courtesy of The Laser Centre.

David very generously wished to donate his prize to the John Merricks Sailing Trust so he offered the new Laser replacement to Richard Valentine (pictured right) who is sponsored by Phoenix Marine, Richard in turn wrote a cheque to the John Merricks Sailing Trust for £1,000.

Phoenix Marine are an approved re-seller of professionally prepared Laser class dinghies, and specialise in the repair and refurbishment of all classes of sailing dinghy.

Richard Valentine is 19 and has been sailing single handed dinghies since the age of 8. He progressed through the ranks in Toppers at a young age and this culminated in his success in winning the UK Topper National Championships in 2003. He then moved to his next challenge on the Laser Radial Qualifier circuit, having purchased his first Laser from Phoenix Marine at the age of 16. He progressed into the Laser Standard at the age of 17 and in 2005 finished 1st in the NSSA Regatta. Richard is currently studying IT in Organisations at the University of Southampton. This location enables him to train at Stokes Bay regularly to further his Laser campaign.

All at the John Merricks Sailing Trust give their utmost thanks to David and Richard for this marvellous donation.
