Ben Ainslie helms the Farr 45 John Merricks to victory on the opening Saturday of Skandia Cowes Week
The Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme team have been sailing at Skandia Cowes Week under the watchful eye of Olympian Ben Ainslie who stepped on board and took the helm. “Having Ben on the boat was really helpful,” Scott Grey commented. "This week we have consolidated as a team and our sailing has gone from strength to strength. Ben was a calming influence and I could see the trimmers and the guys at the back watching how he did things. His patience is phenomenal and he was able to guide us through some sticky situations." Grey continued, “I have learned so much by being a member of the Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme and we have been lucky enough to be allowed to take on the responsibility of actually running and maintaining a 45ft boat. The keelboat scheme has been really good in that you reap the benefits from all the hard work you put in." Ben Ainslie had nothing but praise for the Farr 45 crew. "I have really enjoyed sailing with these guys. They are a fantastic team and they will sail well together in the Fastnet. Obviously they may have some weather issues to deal with, but they are so motivated that their enthusiasm will see them through any difficulties." World renowned navigator and weather router Mike Broughton congratulated the crew of John Merricks for their performance during Cowes Week. Mike, who was navigator on Hawk for the week said, “John Merricks was one of the best sailed boats in Class 1”.
