Charity Cricket Challenge 2009

The Bugle’s Annual Charity Cricket Challenge raises £1,870 for the John Merricks Sailing Trust.

The Bugle / JMST team won back the Cricket Challenge Cup in a hotly contested Charity Cricket Tournament on Sunday 26th July at the College Playing Fields, Hamble.

Olympic medallists, World Champion and Volvo Ocean Race sailors swapped oilskins for cricket whites in aid of the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST).  Ian Walker, Stuart Childerley, David ‘Freddie’ Carr, Jonathan ‘Boycey’ Taylor and Tom McWilliam all walked out to the crease as part of the Bugle / JMST cricket XI.

Local pubs The Bugle, King & Queen, The Victory and Ye Olde Whyte Harte all fielded teams for the coveted Bugle Charity Cricket Challenge Cup.

First to play were The Bugle / JMST v The King & Queen’s team – “The Master Batters”, who despite valiant efforts lost the match.

Next up were Ye Olde Whyte Harte v The Victory Inn, who had a very closely fought match which ended with The Victory scoring their winning runs on the last ball of the game.

As the day was overcast with a few sprinkles of rain and threat of heavier rain to follow, the teams were quickly assembled for the Final, which thanks to some seriously good batting by the Bugle / JMST team was won by the hosting team.

The sound of willow on leather continued with the defending champions Ye Olde Whyte Harte taking on the King & Queen for a playoff for the wooden spoon.  That match was won by The King and Queen, leaving last year’s winners Ye Olde Whyte Harte with the wooden spoon.

Trustee of the JMST, Rod Carr, presided over the prize giving and handed the Cricket Challenge Cup to Matt Boyle (Owner of the Bugle Pub) and Ian Walker, to rapturous applause.

The best bit… a fantastic total of £1,870.32 was raised in total through Sponsorship, The Bugle’s Bar & BBQ, the Raffle and Team entry fees.

The Bugle’s Bar & BBQ operates on a non profit basis and all takings are donated to the JMST. The Bugle generously donate the supplies and resources for this event.

Cricket Telecom provided the essential services – umpires and scorers –

Many local businesses support the event by donating wonderful raffle prizes namely: Vodafone / brand Rapport; Lanson Champagne; Cricket Telecom; The Bugle; Henri Lloyd; Grapefruit Graphics; Yacht Catering Café; Cantina; La Dolce Vita; King & Queen; Wild Group; Holt; Ye Olde Whyte Harte; The Daily Sail; Pig Bags; The River Rat; The Victory Inn; Oracle / BMW Racing; Crewsaver; Puma Racing; Bonne Bouche; RYA; Steph Brandt Remedial Therapist; Green Dragon Racing.
